April Goals

Well, the last couple of month haven’t gone to plan on a number of levels. Apologies for the radio silence, but with everything else the blog has had to take a little bit of back seat since the start of the year. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin.

Way, way back many centuries ago, there was February. February ended up being a rather good month all in all. I got an assignment submitted, found a rhythm with exercise and had some really good sessions in clinic which have left me feeling more confident about my ability to see and help clients. I started out with the monthly planning thing, doing some jobs at the start of the month that helped me get organised. We had a lovely day celebrating Mum and Dad’s golden wedding anniversary, a lovely opportunity to catch up with family and have a lovely meal.

Then came March. This did not start well with a call to say that Mum had a very serious infection and that we needed to get down to the hospital. Miraculously, she fought it off and was discharged in time for Mother’s Day. She wasn’t well enough to go out, but we were able to visit which was lovely. Unfortunately it was short lived, with another serious episode mid-month. I’ve spent far too many days this month in Southampton General, and it has been an emotional rollercoaster for all of us, not to mention knackering driving up and down the M3 (including in the snow!).   It’s been very difficult, and thrown everything up in the air a bit, normal routine went out of the window, food options were limited to hospital outlets for much of the month and the sheer exhaustion has not left me feeling very enthusiastic about exercise. The other issue was some disappointing news about our house plans, sending us back to the drawing board which is frustrating after a year living in a sort of limbo.

With that said, the month ended on a more positive note. All I can say is, Mum is tough as old boots, she was discharged a couple of days ago and is tired but chatty. I found out that I got a 2:1 in the aforementioned assignment, and I have submitted another one. College has been really good, we have moved on to talking about the realities of running our own business, which is thought provoking, and I am bursting with ideas. Perhaps the best bit is, on Thursday I logged off for Easter and two whole weeks off work, which is marvellous. My part time arrangement has also been confirmed on a permanent basis which is also great news.

So April then. Another exciting things is that Paul won a place at his annual company jolly, so he and I are jetting off to the Caribbean for an all expenses paid mini break this week. We haven’t had a proper hot holiday since before the girls arrived, so to say I’m excited would be an understatement! We do obviously want to spend some time with the girls during their school holiday, so we are all off to Weymouth the following week and hoping that the weather picks up!

Despite the crappy weather, I’m starting to feel like spring is in the air, and I think the time off will give me a chance to relax and refresh, and come out all guns blazing in mid-April. I’ve got lots of time on the flight next week to think without distractions, so I’m planning to pack my notebook and really give some thought to the rest of the year and particularly what I want to achieve next quarter. I’ve realised that a lot of my goals are a bit nebulous, and I really want to pin those down and get clear on the steps, hopefully that will not only move things forward but also stop me procrastinating in certain areas. It will also allow me to make sure that my month goals are more focussed and part of a bigger plan, rather than just a random collection of things which seem like a good idea and vaguely link back to my annual goals, which aren’t that specific either in a lot of areas.

Things to aim for in April will be:

  • A review of my aspirations in key areas of my life. Create a goal plan to move me towards those things
  • Take time out to rest, recharge and reconnect

And that’s it really. Sounds a bit vague, but I need to put my energy into being clear about what I want and then starting to make it happen. I’m feeling excited!
